For the past 7 years, Dan served as Director of Music and Liturgy at St. Jude Parish in Peoria, IL, while teaching Pre-K through 8th grade music classes in the parish school. Before arriving at St. Jude, he spent 5 years teaching music in public schools: 2 years as a middle school music teacher in Maplewood, MN, and 3 years as a high school choir director in Beloit, WI.
Even though Dan began his career in public education, the seeds of his calling in music ministry were planted long ago. While in elementary school, his parents formed a “family choir” at their local parish. From 4th grade through high school, Dan's family led music at Mass a few times per month. His mother was the pianist/organist, his father was the cantor, and his older sister and two younger brothers rounded out the choir.
These formative years of parish ministry, combined with Dan's musical training in high school and college (St. John’s University, ’04), provided fertile soil for the Spirit to cultivate. In 2009, Dan heard and answered the call to serve the Church and began his work in parish ministry at St. Jude.
After the first few years there, he discerned the need for additional liturgical and theological formation. In 2012, Dan began graduate studies at St. Joseph’s College in Rensselaer, IN and graduated last July with an M.A. in Music with an emphasis in Church Music and Liturgy.
A note from Dan: While no amount of education, experience, or formation could adequately prepare me to “take the reins” from Cathy Nelson, I will do my best to continue her tradition of excellence, in collaboration with the phenomenal music ministry team here at Holy Spirit. My family and I are delighted to call Holy Spirit our new home—once again, thank you for welcoming us into your community of faith!
Music is a key part of what makes liturgy at Holy Spirit so vibrant and alive. Music ministers encourage and invite everyone to participate in our sung prayer as we worship together. We pray that our song is a vehicle through which the Spirit moves, inspiring spiritual growth and a deeper commitment to living the Gospel of Jesus Christ in our daily lives.
There are a variety of ways to participate in music ministry at Holy Spirit. You can sing or play an instrument in a group that has an ongoing commitment, or you may minister as a cantor or accompanist on a short term or occasional basis. You could even volunteer to start and coordinate a new group!
We have several mixed ensembles, a women's choir, and a youth choir for grades 7-12.
Music ministry groups are scheduled on a rotating basis with varying levels of time commitment required. Our Coordinator of Music Ministry, Dan Klocke, can discuss these options more fully to help you determine how you'd like to become involved.
