“During the early morning hours of Saturday, December 2, 2017, fire broke out at St. Mary's Church in Red Lake, MN completely destroying the historic 159 year old building in a very short time,” as reported by Michael Barrett of Red Lake Nation News.
In 1858, two Benedictine Sisters from the monastery in St. Joseph responded to a request from the people of Red Lake to minister on the reservation. They founded
St. Mary's Mission Church and School.
Red Lake Reservation is the only closed reservation in Minnesota. A closed Reservation means that all land is held in common by the tribe, so there is no private land on the reservation. About 5000 people live on the reservation which at 1258 square miles; similar in size to the state of Rhode Island.
